2½ miles. 2 hours. Medium walk, one way, return by bus. Monks and mills-the Mediaeval period.
Turn left at the sign and pass under the road into the field. In this field note the line of trees on your left (2)-this is the line of the 1,000 year old mill channel (or race) that is the last sign of a corn milling industry that thrived for 900 years. For the next 3/4 mile this channel will be evident. Pass under the next road and into the large field. In the spring or summer bring a wildflower book with you and see how many of the flowers in the fields and hedges you can recognise. Continue through the next field then turn right down the path, cross the old iron bridge (3) then turn immediately left down the steps. This is a good spot to see the kingfisher or even an otter if it's early enough. Pass through three kissing gates then turn sharp left and up some steps to a cycle path. Turn right, go along 50m and turn off right again down more steps to the mill race picnic area. Pass through this area and follow the footpath past the fence on the left, through the next field and up onto the green metal bridge (4). This marks the historical boundary between land owned by Shrewsbury Abbey and that owned by Wenlock Priory in the Middle Ages. Cross the bridge and turn left. The footpath now is an ancient trackway between two mills. Walk along the narrow section next to the brook, then through the fields to the blue bridge (5). Cross it and follow the path to the right along the Brook, going through two tunnels (6), and following the Brook through the Golf course to the kissing gate at the Meole Brace roundabout (7). Cross the river using the road bridge. The bus stop is beyond the petrol station across the road. |
