A flash of kingfisher blue, the silent flight of a barn owl, the splash of otters on the banks of a brook, thick hedgerows and quiet pools with stunning dragonflies above and frogs, toads and newts below. This is just a small cross-section of the wildlife to be found within Shrewsbury's urban boundary. The River Severn and its tributaries, features such as the Old River Bed and the meres left after the last Ice Age, the abandoned railways and Canal all provide key nature areas and wildlife corridors which link up to form a natural matrix in the town.

All these areas are rich in history, the animals and plants provide a living link with a fascinating past. Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council have one of the most comprehensive and active approaches in the country towards managing this countryside for the benefit of people and wildlife and have drawn up a Countryside Strategy that will enhance this resource for the future.

Twenty-two Countryside Heritage Sites have been identified and designated as being of special importance and part of ten are owned and managed by the Council's Countryside Unit in co-operation with many other agencies and the assistance of local people.
Some sites have more detailed information available - see "Rural Rambles"  and Rea Brook Valley pages.

All of the sites are countryside areas and boots or wellingtons are recommended.
